NZ DIA Considering Credit Card Gambling Ban

23 October 2019 by

The gambling regulatory body for New Zealand is the country’s Department of Internal Affairs, and it looks like they may be implementing a ban on players using their credit cards for gambling online. News of the decision came after the SkyCity Entertainment Group, an online casino operator, revealed its plan to launch an internet-based operation catering to players from New Zealand. Although this online platform will strictly cater only to people physically within the country’s borders, it will be licensed and operated by the Malta Gaming Authority, which is an island situated in Southern Europe.

As things currently stand, the only online gambling operator in New Zealand with a local base is the TAB system, which provides for the state-run lottery and additionally offers sports betting services. The proposed addition of a major private betting platform appears to have raised concerns that citizens may be tempted to overspend when it comes to playing real money games and wagering on sporting events.

At the moment, many New Zealanders already play casino games and wager at internet-based operators’ sites, but these brands are generally a lot smaller than the one SkyCity has planned. A government official has stated that the current laws around gambling in the country may need to be revised to ensure that they function as they should. Investigations are also currently underway as to how to prohibit unlawful, offshore brands who may be swindling players and drawing NZ dollars out of the country from operating.
